In the 1920’s, Gordon Jackson Sr. established a company specialising in tennis string, by boiling down and rendering waste products from abattoirs, meat processing warehouses. The original western suburban site in Melbourne, Australia is still the home of Klipspringer today.
In the 30’s, the company began producing natural gut tennis strings, which immediately became popular. The first strings were made from mutton, but it didn’t take long for Klipspringer to start innovating. The world’s first string made from inedible beef serosa ribbons was soon developed. Beef was chosen because its tensile strength is higher than that of mutton.
Soon, Dunlop/Slazenger and Spalding were buying all their strings from Klipspringer. The relationship with Dunlop continued for many years, with both companies establishing themselves as market leaders. In the late 1970’s, Gordon Jackson Sr.’s grandson Robert began to implement some fundamental changes. Klip became the first company to manufacture 36 ft (11m) strings, to cater to the new, oversized racquets, and later, the first to change to 40 ft (12m) lengths as racquets continued to evolve.
In the late 80’s, thanks to Klipspringer’s use of the finest raw materials and adherence to strict manufacturing procedures, the company formed relationships with some of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies, supplying them with natural gut sutures. For the same reasons, Klip strings are also found on some of the world’s best harps, violins and cellos.
The 1980’s also saw Klip move into synthetic gut tennis strings, sourcing the highest quality products from Japan and around the world. Stringing machines and other tennis related accessories also became part of the business, as did Robert’s son, Mark, in 1998. Today, of the original group of natural gut manufacturers, Klipspringer is the only company left in the world to be run by the same family group, as well as the only Authentic Australian brand.
In 2002, Klipspringer continues its growth with the opening of their first U.S. office and distribution center in San Diego, CA.
In September 2006 Klip opens its new European office and distribution center in Erp, The Nederlands. Klip Europe carries a full line of synthetic guts, as well as their now famous natural gut and gut hybrids. Klip plans on being a big player in the string business for many more years to come. Klip europe is the exclusive distributor for the European countries.
